Happy new year everyone!
This term the whole school topic is 'FAR FAR AWAY'
We will explore the theme of 'Far Far Away' in our topic lessons with Mrs C. It will be very interesting looking at maps, atlases and globes to find out more about the United Kingdom and the continents and oceans of the world. We will also have opportunities to look at aerial photographs and plans before making our own. We will also make our own maps with keys using carefully chosen symbols.
In English we will look at a beautiful story called 'The Lion Inside' and complete a number of related reading and writing challenges. As well as working on our grammar objectives including expanded noun phrases and conjunctions. Following half term we will be using another book linked to the Far Far Away theme - The Man on the Moon. Again out reading and writing challenges will be linked to the book. Across the term we will write book reviews, stories, poems, character descriptions and setting descriptions so it will all be very busy.
Our maths topics this term will be Money - recognising coins, notes and adding up small amounts showing an understanding of pounds and pence. Year 2 children will also explore the concept of 'change'. Learning about money is an important life skills and something that many children find difficult. You can help at home by encouraging children to use money in a real life context that involves recognising coins, working out what they can afford and whether they will need any change. Pocket money and real life shopping experiences will really help understanding. Following money, we will also look at Multiplication and Division - please help your year 2 children learn their 2x, 3x, 5x, and 10x tables by heart and your year 1 children to count in steps on 2, 5 and 10 from 0. We will then send a few weeks on fractions and measuring before Easter.
Science lessons will start with some investigations to wrap up last term's work on materials. We will then look at exercise, healthy eating and body parts and the basic needs of humans and animals. We will also observe the signs of Spring once they appear.
PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday. On Tuesdays, Miss Nicholls will work as sports coach with the children on their agility, balance and control trough our specialist PE programme 'Real PE'. On Wednesdays the children will have a second PE session. Please leave your PE kit at school all the time as we may swap days or do an additional session. We will send the PE bags home at holiday times for washing. Please could you ensure all PE kit is named - dark sports shorts, blue polo shirt and pumps or trainers please.
We will continue using Purple Mash for our computing sessions. We will look at questioning (early database skills), online safety and spreadsheets. As always, any chance children get to log-in to Purple Mash at home either to share their class work or try something new is great for developing their skills and confidence.
Please remember that our door is always open and we are more than happy to discuss work or personal issues to make sure that your child has the best possible time at school.... there isn't much we can't help with, unless we don't know about it. If you need us, leave a message with the teacher on the gate in the morning or speak to us after school.
We hope you enjoy looking through photos on the website to share our learning experiences with us.
