Art

Art is an inspirational way of communicating with and responding to what we see. Our children need opportunities to grow and be nurtured by the creativity that art provides. We want them to have time to explore, learn specific skills, imagine and work collaboratively through art so that they are able to connect and share ideas with others. We are fortunate to be naturally surrounded by ‘beauty’ but we aim to show our children that we can capture that in unique ways. Our children use language such as colour, line, texture, pattern, shape, form and space to describe what they see or can imagine. The materials and techniques we use in drawing, painting, printing, textiles, sculpture, collage and the use of IT offer opportunities to link these across different areas of the curriculum. We look at the work of artists, craft makers and designers and investigate what inspired them, hoping that in our exploration, we may encourage every child to have their own opinions on how it relates to their own lives.
We use the National Curriculum and Focus Education© to help us identify key knowledge and skills. You can find out more here.
Over their time in school, children will have the opportunity of developing their artistic abilities through drawing, painting, printing, 3-dimensional work, textiles, collage and the use of IT. They will use sketch books to record their ideas, show knowledge and practise skills.
Our long term plan for art is here.
In Early Years (the Reception year), the curriculum is organised along broad themes. You can see what art looks like in EYFS here.
We use itineraries to help us focus on what we need to teach, these also contain key words, curriculum links and opportunities for enrichment activities. We use these to help us see what our children are able to understand
